Meet Dianne & Harald Andreesen
Harald Andreesen has fishing in his blood, but when it came time to retire from working on the high seas, he took fishing in a different direction. Instead of catching the fish, these days Harald cuts, cooks and serves them in his own food truck six days each week throughout the summer tourist season in Wells. He’s only been in business for a few years, but Big H’s Halibut & Chips has already received accolades from customers and a 2nd place award for Best Food Truck in BC.
Harald and his wife, Dianne Andreesen, also own the Hubs Motel. Between the motel, which operates year-round, and the food truck, the couple keeps very busy, particularly in the summer time when thousands of tourists flock to the region. They have met people from all over the world and it is one of the things that they most enjoy about operating their tourism and hospitality businesses here in Wells. Since opening Big H’s, Dianne and Harald say they have also received a great deal of support from locals. Though they serve a lot of tourists, they know that they wouldn’t be able to do what they do without the people of Wells and its surrounding communities.
When the busy summer season winds down, the food truck gets stored away for the winter. Things slow down a bit for the motel too, just enough to give the couple time to enjoy some of the many amazing winter activities in and around Wells. They are especially fond of snowmobiling, curling, cross country skiing and snowshoing. Harald also likes to get out hunting when he can.
Authentic. Fresh. Delicious.
Big H brings the West Coast to the Cariboo with his BC halibut, cod and salmon. Harald “Big H” Andreesen was a commercial fisherman for 33 years. He started halibut fishing out of Prince Rupert in 1977, and it was on those very fishing boats that he got his nickname. After many years of living the hard life of a fisherman, he retired from commercial fishing in 2010 to fulfill his dream of having a fish and chip concession trailer. Big H knows fish but instead of hooking – he’s cooking! Each order begins with ocean-fresh fish that has been hand cut in the morning and then thinly-battered in a highly-secret, original-recipe batter. It is deep fried to perfection: crisp on the outside, moist and flaky on the inside. Orders are then topped off with crunchy golden chips and served with their original home-made coleslaw and tartar sauce. Crispy fried calamari, oysters, prawns and chicken filet strips are also available along with Big H’s secret sauces. Big H’s Halibut & Chips can be found in the parking lot of the Hubs Motel located at 12438 Barkerville Highway! Outside seating available, or take your order to go!
